21c Museum Hotel

Durham

21c Durham combines a world-class contemporary art museum with a sophisticated boutique hotel. For the adaptive reuse of the Hill Building, the city’s most iconic structure, the lighting design delicately balances the needs of guest experience, art installation, and hotel operations, while respecting the building’s Art Deco heritage - often all in the same space. Originally designed by Empire State Building architects Shreve, Lamb and Harmon, lighting unifies public spaces, destination restaurant, bar, ballroom, spa, and galleries creating a cohesive mood throughout the day. Light fittings are organized with the challenging prospect that all areas are potential art locations.
